DjwOhio Attended this in High School. A scuffle occurred outside the east side of the stadium and tear gas went thru the crowd. Was mayhem people running from the east to west in the stands. https://realrocknews.com/when-jefferson-airplanes-akron-show-turned-into-a-war-zone/ Quoted from RustBelt magazine; The next day, on August 21, Jefferson Airplane took center stage and caused an exceptionally troublesome night at the Rubber Bowl. To start, inside the stadium there were just under twenty thousand in attendance, but on a hill that overlooked the stadium sat a few hundred, effectively avoiding the ticket fee. The Beacon Journal reported that once the sun set and the band started to perform, a few ticket-dodgers on the hill began throwing rocks and bottles at the abundance of police officers working the event. In response, the officers launched tear gas into the crowd on the hill. Just when it seemed as though the police had everything under control, Grace Slick, the band’s lead singer, began egging on the fight, saying things to the likes of ‘get the pigs, fight the establishment.’ In Slick’s autobiography, Somebody to Love?, she mentions the show, saying: “They knew we remembered Kent State and they didn’t trust us. All along the front of the stage stood a row of twenty-five officers, arms linked in riot style, creating a barrier.” Jefferson Airplane / Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen Aug 22, 2026

D.J.Skeleton Over two days in November 1996, I pulled off what became infamously known as “The Kingston Sandwich”: Headstones at Studebaker’s on November 8, The Tragically Hip at the Pacific Coliseum the next night, and then straight to the Town Pump to see Headstones again afterward. That last Headstones show had an extra bit of mythology around it. Word suddenly started buzzing through the Town Pump that Gord Downie had shown up after the Hip finished their Coliseum show. I never actually saw him, but the rumour tore through the building and everybody seemed to be talking about it. Somewhere in the middle of the chaos, I also ran into the bass player from Rymes with Orange in the crowd near the mosh pit. By that point we vaguely knew each other because I’d been to so many Rymes with Orange shows that year, so we hung out and talked for a bit. Headstones, Tragically Hip, Headstones again—all crammed into about 24 hours, with Gord Downie supposedly in the building and a familiar face from the local scene in the pit. A pretty damn memorable Kingston Sandwich. The Tragically Hip / Rheostatics Aug 22, 2026
