Dan Rodgerson I went into The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight expecting a fairly traditional symphonic take on rock music. I could not have been more wrong. The production was dark, theatrical, sexy and slightly sinister, with masked musicians, dramatic lighting, powerhouse vocals and a stage that felt more Black Sabbath than symphony hall. The three featured vocalists were outstanding, and “Bring Me to Life” was a particular highlight. What impressed me most was how completely invested the musicians were in the performance. Strings, brass, percussion, flute, piccolo and trombone were all given genuine rock-star moments. My only small critiques were that some of the theatricality occasionally became a little overdone and that I would have preferred a few more universally recognizable songs in the set list. Overall, though, I was blown away. The musicianship, vocals, choreography and production were exceptional, and I would absolutely see them again.  Fraser Allen My second visit to Chilfest featured a slightly less impressive lineup than last year. Nevertheless, the excellent setup, good selection of beers, including plenty of 0% options in my case, and strong attendance once again proved that Chilfest is a festival well worth supporting. After Friday's tribute acts, it was time for the original artists to take centre stage on Saturday. Tony Hadley got the crowd going with a set packed with Spandau Ballet classics, while also taking time to thank his former bandmates. Next up were Toploader, who mixed their own hits with excellent covers of Mr. Blue Sky and The Whole of the Moon. As always, Dancing in the Moonlight remained a crowd favourite. The Christians delivered a solid performance, as did Fun Lovin' Criminals, despite the absence of Huey Morgan. Eternal, now featuring just the sisters from the original lineup, delivered vocally, although they strangely omitted their No. 1 hit, I Wanna Be the Only One. Kid Creole, accompanied by his new Coconuts, somehow managed to stretch four songs across 45 minutes but remained highly entertaining for a performer just shy of his 76th birthday. Headliners Level 42 then took to the stage and delivered a very strong set, focusing mainly on their greatest hits. Mike Lindup's vocals were spot on, particularly during Lessons in Love, while Mark King demonstrated that he has lost none of his remarkable bass-playing ability. And with that, another Chilfest came to an end. Overall, while the lineup didn't quite match last year's, it was still a very enjoyable day. Considering the ticket price and the importance of supporting a local Hertfordshire festival, Chilfest remains an event that is well worth attending. Chilfest Oct 05, 2026
Fraser Allen December 2021 was a strange time for live music. One of my friends pulled out after his partner became worried that he might catch Covid amid all the concern surrounding the Omicron variant, and the uncertainty certainly seemed to have affected the turnout. The Roundhouse felt only around two-thirds full. Politics and pandemics aside, there was a gig to enjoy, and The Lottery Winners proved to be a superb choice of support. Their set was as funny as it was entertaining, with frontman Thom Rylance providing plenty of between-song banter. At one point he even spotted me looking at my mobile phone and told me off! Thom also spoke very openly about his ADHD, and the warmth and support between him and his bandmates Katie and Rob was obvious. I left thinking The Lottery Winners were definitely a band to keep an eye on. Who could have predicted where the next five years would take them? Then it was time for Shed Seven. Their pre-Christmas tours were becoming something of a biennial tradition for me, and once again they delivered the hits alongside more recent material. The set included “Going for Gold”, “Disco Down”, “On Standby” and “Getting Better”, before the inevitable finale of “Chasing Rainbows”. That's always a special song live, but this night produced one of those moments you remember years later. Even after Shed Seven had left the stage, the crowd carried on singing the refrain for several minutes. We were still singing as we headed away from the Roundhouse towards Chalk Farm tube station.  Dan Rodgerson Depeche Mode had been on our bucket list for probably ten years, and they absolutely delivered. I was blown away by the sound quality, the showmanship, and the artistry they brought to the stage. The Memento Mori World Tour was more than a concert. It was a complete performance. Easily one of my top five retro concerts of all time. Highly recommend. Loved it. Depeche Mode Oct 05, 2026
